HP Sauce factory site purchased

 Don Wouhra

Don Wouhra said the site would
employ about 200 people.

 HP Sauce Factory

The HP Sauce factory closed in 2007
and has since been demolished.

Up to 200 new jobs could be created on the site of the former HP Sauce factory in Birmingham. Heinz closed the factory in 2007 with the loss of 125 jobs and moved production to the Netherlands. The Wouhras plan to build a food wholesaler and conference centre as well as a 15-storey building to replace the factory's iconic tower. The tower and factory on the six-acre site had been a fixture on the Aston skyline for more than 100 years before being demolished.

Outline discussions

The plans also include a large kitchen where members of the public could be taught to cook Indian food. The firm said it would be keen to hear from former HP employees who were interested in working at the new site.

The company signed the deal to buy the site last week and outline discussions have been held with the city council over their building plans. They said they had paid substantially less than the asking price, which was believed to be up to £5m. The Wouhra's said they hoped to finish construction of the site within the next 18 months. Don Wouhra said: "There will be some warehouse workers, there will be some catering jobs, there will be some general office staff.

"It will be quite a mix of employment."
