Sudan 1, 2, 3, 4 and Para Red Illegal Dyes

East End Foods is a responsible importer of chillies. We cut out the risk of adulteration from Sudan 1, 2, 3, 4, Para red illegal dyes and other harmful substances 15 years ago.

We would like to add some important information to the recent press coverage of this topic that will be helpful to customers.

Sudan 1, 2, 3, 4, Para red illegal dyes are a totally unacceptable and unnecessary dye that has been added to improve the red colour of cheap and poor quality chillies. It is a known carcinogen.

We must examine how it has entered the food chain:

  • Ingredient buyers in the UK often look for the cheapest materials
  • They may have little knowledge of Indian food ingredients
  • They are unaware of the scale of food adulteration in source countries
  • Bad chillies may not be sorted out by unscrupulous producers, giving the product a poor colour; it may have been poorly stored; hygiene rules may not have been followed
  • Sudan 1, 2, 3, 4 and Para red illegal dyes are added to make these poor quality chillies look good
  • Companies fail to test the product they are importing
  • Products are sold on without further checks

How can large companies avoid these problems?

  • Good procurement is necessary therefore it is important to go to the source
  • Cut out the number of intermediaries in the purchasing process
  • Select a good food processor who can also be appointed as exporter
  • Ensure that buyers are more informed about Indian and other ethnic food ingredients
